Litigation funders Virage Capital Management and TRGP Capital invested in hundreds of lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson (J&J) regarding talc products, in exchange for a percentage of any winnings. J&J is now willing to pay $8.9 billion to settle any lawsuits.

The involvement of funders is public information due to an New Jersey court rule requiring the disclosure of certain information about funders outside the state. The rule aims to respond to the increasing calls for the regulation of litigation funders. J&J has to deal with more than 60,000 lawsuits when you include federal and state infant powder litigation.
