April 10 2023 Update: Bloomberg has an interesting article about a new law within New Jersey that is shedding new light on the funding of litigation in the baby powder Class action suit. Litigation funders Virage Capital Management and TRGP Capital invested in hundreds of claims that were brought against Johnson & Johnson (J&J) over talc products in exchange in exchange for a portion of settlements. J&J is now willing the payment of $8.9 billion to settle any lawsuits.

The funders’ involvement is publicly available due to an New Jersey court rule requiring the disclosure of certain information regarding outside funding backers. This rule is intended to respond to the increasing calls for regulation of the litigation funders. J&J faces over 60,000 claims when you include federal and state baby powder lawsuits.
